The Halberd is built for taking down Capital ships, and for doing it well. It has enough armor to withstand a concentrated blast from a Mk II laser, and to do it repeatedly. This somewhat amazing feat is necessary for survival against the 'Big Ones'. The 6 Mk I torpedo tubes are reloadable while in flight, and the 2 Mk I lasers are perfect for strafing runs. The one great weakness of a halberd is it's maneuverability. Most fighters can get behind it and pummel it to death, as it has no weapons for that. But with proper fighter escort, it has been extremely sucessful.
